Ferguson: Moyes tried to ‘display manhood’
Sir Alex Ferguson claims that David Moyes’ biggest mistake was trying to ‘display his manhood’ by changing the coaching staff at Manchester United.
The former United boss says that Moyes should have opted for continuity and kept Mike Phelan instead of bringing in former Everton assistant Steve Round.

In his new book Leading, Ferguson writes: ‘I’m sure there are things that David would do differently if he had the opportunity to relive his time at Old Trafford.
‘Such as keeping Mick Phelan who would have been the invaluable guide to the many layers of the club that Ryan Giggs is to Louis van Gaal today.

In short, Moyes had no idea about what the job entailed, and decided to have an impact on something that was relatively stable. The difference between winning leagues and competitions and coming second is very fine and delicate. Instead he jumped into the seat and gave the steering wheel a good yank, and made it wobble so hard we're still recovering. Just makes you realise how much success in management seems to come down to a bit of luck. He made it stick at Everton, but had been pretty average before that and hit his own ceiling pretty early.
